The farmer who paints
Gene Eu is a self-taught Malaysian artist whose work comes from a life spent among animals: on a farm in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and now on a durian and mangosteen orchard he has brought back to life in Malaysia.
In 2019 he developed his dry brush technique: Sumi ink with no water, dragged so the bristles split and leave a texture like fur. A piece that once took two days with a pen now takes about fifteen minutes. Most of his subjects are animals he has lived with or works to protect.
